The original genre of “City Pop” emerged in Japan in the 1970s and 80s. The unique blend of international disco, funk and R&B became popular and continues to have a strong following by music fans and international DJs who put their contemporary spin on the vibrant genre.
Returning for a second consecutive year, this year, City Pop Night returns with a new name, “Moon in the Sky” and will feature ANRI, a popular artist who is known in the Japanese city pop genre, along with two DJs, JQ from Nulbarich and Tsugu from We Share Records.
Enjoy a night on the town listening to live performances while tasting Japanese food, at the historic Fonda Theatre. Originally build in the 1920s, the Fonda boasts of past performers including The Rolling Stones, Black Eyed Peas, Pearl Jam, Katy Perry, Stevie Wonder, and more.
All ages welcome.
Artist Lineup
ANRI
International Artist Anri celebrates four decades of musical excellence. As a Singer, Songwriter, and Producer, her remarkable career has captivated audiences worldwide. With a genre-spanning repertoire and global influence, Anri has become an iconic figure in the industry. She is well known for her contributions to the City Pop movement in the 80’s and for her collaborations with acclaimed International Artists. Anri's music transcends borders.
Her philanthropic endeavors, including supporting children in Africa through "UNICEF LIVE", and the memorable performance at the Nagano Olympics, showcase her commitment to making a positive impact on the global music scene.
JQ from Nulbarich (DJ)
Singer-songwriter JQ is the lead vocal and main producer of the Japanese band “Nulbarich.”
Nulbarich released their first album, "Guess Who?" in October, 2016. Two years later, Nulbarich accomplished their Budokan live performance where tickets were sold out immediately. Now they are on the global scene as they perform live in Japan, and in many Asian countries including Seoul, Taipei and Shanghai.
Nulbarich’s groovy sound is created from JQ’s beat-maker experience. JQ’s style is to create music blending English and Japanese, resulting in creating an emotional and original pop sound.
The band’s name “Nulbarich” displays JQ’s ambivalent style. “Nul” as nothing, and “Rich” as filled.
DJ Tsugu from We Share Records
Tsugu Itagaki is a Japanese artist born and raised in Kumamoto, Japan.
Tsugu began his Djing career in the early 2000s. Primarily influenced by American musical genres such as Soul, Jazz and Hip-Hop he decided to make the move to Los Angeles in the year 2007 to expand his Djing Career. Being a native of Japan, he has taken notice of the recent rise in popularity and demand for Japanese City Pop music.
Music, Tsugu grew up listening to. Thanks in part to social media sites such as Youtube exposing new audiences to music once only heard in Japan, Tsugu has now made it a mission to help bridge the divide between Japanese artist and Western listeners.
Tsugu can be found djing throughout Los Angeles, including residency at Part Time Lover, Homage Brewery, The Let’s Go! Disco. You can also find him selling records, including hard to find Japanese imports, via his company We Share Records, or check out his playlist on Spotify.
