Discover the timeless elegance of the Japanese tea ceremony as part of the “Masters of Carpentry: Melding Forest, Skill and Spirit” exhibition. On select Tuesday afternoons this winter, visitors can experience a “pop-up” tea ceremony within the gallery itself, and join JAPAN HOUSE staff who will share with guests insightful details about the history, construction, and use of the historic Sa-an Teahouse on display. In the midst of a bustling holiday season, December offers the perfect opportunity to reset and recharge through the calming yet inspiring tradition of tea ceremony.

Originally designed in the late 16th century by the renowned tea master Sen no Rikyu, the Sa-an teahouse provides an ideal space to immerse in the rich and diverse heritage of the tea ceremony. The Japanese tea ceremony, known as chanoyu or sadō (“the way of tea”), is a centuries-old practice that transcends the simple act of serving tea (to learn more about the history of Japanese tea, read an article from our archive). This carefully choreographed tradition embodies Japanese philosophical and artistic principles, and creates a meditative space of hospitality and mindfulness that continues to resonate in the modern age.

On December 3 and 10, guests will experience the Omotesenke tea ceremony, led by experts from the Omotesenke Domonkai Southern California Region. This school of tea ceremony is known for its relaxed and accessible approach to tea, while still upholding the core principles of harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility.

Join us for an inspiring afternoon of mindful relaxation that illuminates the unique intersection of tea culture and Japanese craft.

In Japan, a rich tradition of carpentry and wood craftsmanship has flourished over centuries, driven by imperial and sacred architecture. Daiku, the revered master carpenters, honor nature by sourcing wood harmoniously with the forest. Renowned for their precision, Japanese woodworking techniques embody a profound reverence for nature. Despite limited metal ore resources, Japanese craftsmen innovated world-class carpentry tools and joinery techniques. This exhibition honors Japanese carpenters, showcasing their tools and indispensable joinery techniques, celebrating the enduring legacy of Japanese craftsmanship and their holistic relationship with the environment.
