JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles, in collaboration with the Yanai Initiative at UCLA and Waseda University, invites guests to attend an exploration of Japanese tea both as a practice and as a scholarly topic.

“Japanese Tea Ceremony,” chanoyu, chadō, or just “Tea” has been a subject of international fascination and academic interest from the sixteenth century to the present day. Yet, due to the depth, breadth, and complexity of its imbrication with Japanese history, culture, and spirituality, it can be a remarkably difficult subject to introduce in scholarly and pedagogical contexts.

The academic symposium “Teaching Japanese Tea” proposes to help fill this gap and make it easier and more rewarding for anyone to teach English-speaking students about the rich history and cultural value of Japanese tea practice.

In this one day, public-facing symposium, guests are invited to listen as academics from across the US and beyond explore the topic of tea, and teaching about tea, across four topical sessions, each featuring scholars and experienced tea practitioners presenting on their approaches to teaching tea across disciplines and in public spaces.

This event is open to the public. Attendance at all sessions of the symposium is not required. Light refreshments will be served.
